Your current butt plug feels great. You've grown comfortable with it, and now you've got your eye on something a little bigger.
So, is it time to move up?
The short answer: consider another size when your current plug feels consistently comfortable, you're genuinely curious about more fullness, and the next toy looks like a sensible choice for you. Even then, there's no guarantee a larger plug will feel right.
Anal training progression isn't a race, and there's no magic number of sessions that makes you ready. What matters is knowing what you want to change and whether the next toy is actually a good match.
First Question: Do You Even Want a Bigger Plug?
Sounds obvious, but it's worth asking.
Are you looking for more fullness because you enjoy that sensation? Or are you moving up simply because your training set has another size waiting?
Those aren't quite the same thing.
If your current plug feels fantastic, keep enjoying it. You might even find that a different curve, texture or firmness gives you something new without adding any width.
A bigger plug isn't automatically a better plug. Sometimes a different design is where the fun begins.
How Do You Know When to Consider the Next Size?
Start with the plug you already own.
Can you insert and remove it comfortably without forcing anything? Does it feel good while you're wearing it? Have your recent sessions been free from pain, bleeding or lingering soreness?
If the answers are yes and you're curious about more fullness, it's reasonable to start comparing your options.
Notice I said comparing, not immediately reaching for the next size.
Being comfortable with one plug doesn't guarantee the next will suit you. And something that felt easy last week might feel less comfortable today.
Your body doesn't follow a product catalogue.
Don't Just Look at the Size Label
Here's where people can get caught out.
You see Small, Medium and Large in a training set and assume each one is a neat little step up.
Not necessarily.
The widest diameter matters, but so do the tip, taper, neck, insertable length and firmness.
A rounded plug and a long tapered one can feel quite different, even when their widest diameters are similar. A thicker neck can also change how noticeable a plug feels once it's in place.
So forget hunting for the perfect number of millimetres to increase by. Compare the actual toys, not just their labels.
Let's Look at a Real Example
Our Black Curved Silicone Anchor Butt Plug Training Set comes in three sizes:
- Small: 24 mm (0.94 in) widest diameter
- Medium: 28 mm (1.10 in) widest diameter
- Large: 36 mm (1.42 in) widest diameter
See the difference?
Small to Medium adds 4 mm (0.16 in). Medium to Large adds 8 mm (0.31 in).
That's twice the diameter increase. Not exactly three equal steps, is it?
The neck width and length also change, so the difference goes beyond the widest part.
None of this means one jump is automatically suitable or unsuitable. It simply shows why checking the actual measurements matters.
Now compare that with our Black Silicone Anal Dilator Set. Its longer, tapered designs offer a different shape from a traditional bulb-shaped butt plug.
Neither is the compulsory next step. They're simply different options worth comparing.
Need a refresher on what those measurements mean? Our Butt Plug Size Guide explains diameter, insertable length and neck width without turning shopping into a maths exam.
Stuck at the Same Butt Plug Size?
You've been enjoying one size for months. The next one is sitting in your drawer, looking very tempting, but every attempt feels like too much.
So what's going on?
First, look at the toy itself.
Is it much wider than your current plug? Is the tip blunter? Is the material firmer? A different design might explain why it feels more demanding.
You could compare another shape, stick with your favourite or put the bigger toy away for now.
What you shouldn't do is keep forcing something that hurts just because you already bought it.
And if you're wondering how long progression is supposed to take, our Realistic Anal Training Timeline explains why there isn't one schedule that works for everyone.
Being comfortable at the same size isn't a failure. You might simply have found one you really like.
Know When to Call It a Day
A little curiosity is great. Pushing through pain isn't.
If a larger toy meets strong resistance, stop. Sharp pain, burning or bleeding aren't signs that you're nearly there.
If a toy is already inserted, remove it gently only if you can do so without force. Persistent pain or any bleeding deserves medical assessment. Severe pain, heavy bleeding or a toy that becomes stuck requires urgent medical care.
And don't try to cover up discomfort with numbing products so you can keep going.

There's always another day. Your body doesn't owe that bigger plug anything.
So, What's Your Next Move?
Maybe you're ready for more fullness. Maybe you'd rather experiment with a new shape. Or maybe your current favourite is doing a perfectly good job.
Whichever sounds right, compare what you're actually buying: the dimensions, design and how it differs from what you already enjoy.
For the bigger picture, our Anal Training Guide covers the different approaches, preparation and safety considerations.
And remember, you're shopping for pleasure, not trying to collect every size in the range.
Choose the toy you want, not the size you think you're supposed to reach.
