Curious about anal training, but unsure where to begin? Start with a simple goal: finding out what feels comfortable for you.
“Anal training” usually means getting familiar with anal penetration through gradual, unhurried practice. That might involve a small plug, a slim trainer or simply learning to feel more at ease. Moving to larger toys is optional.
This guide brings the basics together and points you towards more detailed help when you need it.
What Do You Want from Anal Training?
Perhaps you want your first toy to feel less intimidating. You might already enjoy a plug and want to understand your options before trying another shape or size.
Both are reasonable places to start. Choose a goal that makes sense for you, such as feeling more confident, understanding your preferences or communicating more easily with a partner.
You can stay with a size you enjoy. There is no requirement to keep increasing it.
Choose a First Toy You Feel Comfortable With
Start with something small and manageable. Look for a smooth surface, a gradual taper and a substantial flared base or external handle that prevents the toy from slipping completely inside. Planned Parenthood’s toy-safety guidance explains why an external base matters.
If you are choosing a plug, our Butt Plug Size Guide explains diameter, insertable length and neck width. A “small” label on its own tells you much less than the measurements.
Anal training sets let you compare several sizes within one range. Check the smallest size and the gaps between them before buying. You do not have to use every piece.
Prefer a straighter shape? Anal dilators offer another option. Compare the actual design rather than assuming the name makes it suitable for a beginner.
Make Comfort the Starting Point
Choose a time when you feel willing and unhurried. If you are with a partner, agree that either of you can pause or stop at any point.
Use plenty of lubricant and check its compatibility with your toy and any condoms. Water-based lubricant is a practical starting option for many toys; the Anal Lube Guide explains the differences.
Keep the pace slow and stop if anything hurts. You do not need to finish a session, use the whole toy or reach a particular size.
For the practical method, read How to Train for Anal Safely. For more on stretching precautions, see How to Stretch for Anal Safely.
When Should You Think About a Larger Size?
Being able to insert a toy once is different from feeling comfortable using and removing it.
Before considering another size, pay attention to the whole experience: whether you feel relaxed, whether use is comfortable and whether you have any soreness afterwards. Do not use a successful session as a reason to push through discomfort next time.
Shape, firmness and length can change the experience alongside diameter. A toy that looks only slightly larger may still feel very different.
Staying with your current toy is always an option. If you are curious about a different size, our Anal Training Progression guide helps you think through that next choice, including what to do when you feel stuck.
How Long Does Anal Training Take?
A calendar cannot tell you when your body is ready for a different toy. You do not need a deadline, a weekly size target or a daily practice streak.
Let comfort guide whether you repeat an experience, take a break or reconsider your choice of toy. If training starts to feel like an obligation, it is fine to step away.
Our Anal Training Timeline looks more closely at expectations and pacing.
Know When to Stop and Get Help
Pain, burning or bleeding are reasons to stop. Avoid returning to penetration while you are sore or irritated. If you suspect you have rushed a size change, Can You Stretch Too Fast in Anal Training? discusses the warning signs.
Seek medical advice for bleeding, persistent pain or new problems controlling your bowels. Heavy bleeding, severe pain or a toy stuck inside require urgent medical attention. See healthdirect’s anal injury guidance for more on when to get help.
Clean toys according to their individual instructions, and change condoms between partners or body openings. Our guide to cleaning anal toys covers material and component differences.
Choose Your Next Step
You might want a first trainer, another size within a familiar range or simply a clearer idea of what you enjoy. Bigger toys and advanced equipment are optional choices.
